May 3 is World Freedom Press Day. United Nations says this day should be “a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom.” Over the past two years or so, I have witnessed the steady and relentless assault on freedom of expression. For the younger generations this may be nothing! Yet, to someone like me, who experienced first-hand what censorship meant communist regime in Romania, this is outrageous.
“ I will fight to the last drop of my blood so that you have the right to disagree with me!”
Ion Rațiu
Neither double standards nor censorship are acceptable, and they should not be tolerated. In my view, as soon as the first signs of these emerge, society and the legal authorities should take action accordingly. Or at least this is what must happen in a real democracy. Unfortunately, there have been too many signs that this is no longer Romania’s case.
Below, I have left you two articles that reflect the day-to-day life in communist Romania so well. They are especially relevant for nations that never experienced the horrors of such a regime, yet still judge us for how we react when someone tries to silence us.
