Why join World IA Day - personal perspective

"Whether you have 10 people in a coffee shop or 300 in a theater, your goal is the same; provide a place and time to discuss and learn about information architecture."
— Abby Covert
Co-founder of World IA Day

It is an amazing feeling to see how people start contributing and supporting, once you announce such an event. Yes, there is work to do, but there is a lot of support from the global World Information Association. Lots of resources. Help from global sponsors such as Rosenfeld Media, Balsamiq, O’Reilly Media, Rutgers, UXweak etc.

5 things that worked for me and my teams!

  • When it comes to the size of the event, do not be scared and think necessarily of a large  one. Grow gradually, depending on community’s reactions. The last time I organized World IA Day in Bucharest I planned for 100 people, but the number of those who applied for an invitation grew very fast. Then, volunteers and sponsors showed up. We ended having 180 people, some standing up thought the entire event and to them that did not matter. The content, the knowledge sharing and the way people connected mattered much much more!
  • Pay attention to the topics and speakers! Go for “the good stuff”, meaning quality, relevance and originality come first. We did not go for sponsored presentations, but that was a a choice for not altering the quality.
  • Stick with WIAD 2027 main theme, but also take into consideration the local needs and interests. To me that was a major success factor and raised both sponsors’ interest and free media exposure (online , offline and even TV channels)
  • Do not be shy! Call for Volunteers! We worked with inters, students and former colleagues.
  • Check potential sponsors (of all sizes).
